What Is Music Production?

PRODUCTION
Music production is how songs are created behind the scenes. Students learn how to make beats, melodies, and full songs using professional software like Ableton Live.
Artists like Marshmello create their music this way before it's ever performed live.
SPEED LESSON EXAMPLE
Learning by Recreating Hits
In this speed lesson, we recreated “Illegal” by PinkPantheress from scratch to show students how a Grammy-nominated song is built. By breaking down the track layer by layer—from the Underworld sample to the minimal drum pattern and airy synths—students learn the exact techniques used in professional production.
“Illegal” is a strong example of how simple ideas can turn into professional level music. The song uses a minimal structure and creative sampling, showing students that effective music production is often about smart choices, not complexity. With two Grammy Award nominations, it proves that clean arrangements, sampling techniques, and creativity are real skills that can lead to industry-level success.
This is just one of many lessons where students learn by recreating real songs—understanding song structure, sound design, mixing, and the creative decisions that make hits connect with millions of listeners.
